NEW YORK--Apr. 6--She began in 1981 with a small cabaret in the Chelsea section of Manhattan and before long she was filling her 120-seat club by presenting unknown comics like Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Sandra Bernhard and Pee-wee Herman.

No one in the business is quite sure whether Caroline Hirsch anticipated the burst of popularity that stand-up comedy clubs enjoyed in the 1980s or whether she helped create it. Most say she did some of each.
