It's been a long winter. In Michigan the snow still lies two and three feet deep on the forest floor. Behind me I hear the sound of snowshoes breaking a frozen white crust. My companion and I skill have a quarter-mile trek to reach our destination: a remote cabin on the shores of Lake Superior. Both of us wear backpacks. We drag two sleds, each loaded with tools, pails and other equipment for making maple syrup.
I've reshuffled my schedule as pastor, teacher and counselor for the next two weeks. My colleague, a former university football coach and son of a Wisconsin dairy farmer, has been diligently watching the weather. We agreed the time was right. With ...
