A collapse of General Motors would leave its European operations - led by Opel - in need of a need a partner or new owners to survive.
But who would that be?
BMW and Daimler are unlikely to want to buy the Opel brand. BMW with Rover and Daimler with Chrysler have had bad experiences with volume manufacturers.
Volkswagen has plenty of its own brands and would likely be barred from buying Opel by European competition rules.
Chinese automakers such as Great Wall Motor could be interested because they need to create a presence in Europe. Toyota might want Opel to improve its footprint in the region.
