The Abu Dhabi EC, headed by the emirate's powerful Crown Prince and UAE Deputy Supreme Armed Forces Commander Shaikh Muhammad bin Zayed al-Nahyan, has directly sponsored or encouraged a number of new energy companies which have emerged in recent years. The most important among these is Mubadala Development Co. (MDC) which is a diversified holding group chaired by Shaikh Muhammad himself created in 2002 as an evolution of the UAE Offset Group. MDC has strategic alliances with IOCs, such as Oxy, Shell, etc. MDC's unit Liwa Energy is a petroleum E&P firm investing abroad.
