Background
Teleost fishes have a variety of evolutionarily labile sex-determination systems and relatively undifferentiated sex chromosomes [1], and thus are interesting research models for the exploration of how sex-determining mechanisms evolve. The current view of the sex-determination cascade describes it as a gene hierarchy [2].
