Computer and TV Worlds Collide at the NAB Convention
The most dramatic development at this week's NAB convention was off-campus, where three computer industry leaders introduced their own idea of how digital broadcasting should go. Microsoft, Compaq and Intel advanced a three-step proposal--HDO, HD1 and HD2--that would lead toward full implementation early in the next century. The Catch-22: all broadcasting would be in progressive scan, not the interlace system upon with the broadcast standard is predicated. Microsoft also made some on-campus news announcing buying WEB-TV [see story page 11].
