Dogs in Distress rescues abandoned dogs mainly from Ashton Pound which provides a pound facility for Dublin City Council, Fingal and Dun Laoghire Rathdown County Councils and collects over 3,500 dogs every year. Ashton is the busiest pound in the country and assisting such a volume of dogs is a huge undertaking on a daily basis.
Ireland's stray and dog destruction figures are some of the worst per head of population in the developed world. Last year 23,520 ended up in Irish pounds, 15,587 surrendered by their owners in the full knowledge that surrendered dogs are only entitled to be kept for one day before being destroyed (five days for stray dogs).
