Even though everyone knew it was coming, the moment must have been painful at General Motors. On Wednesday, Jan. 21, GM acknowledged that Toyota had surpassed it in worldwide sales in 2008.

The totals: Toyota, 8.97 million; GM, 8.36 million. By GM's count.

Those last words matter, because Automotive News and a few other discerning counters revealed a year ago that the title actually had changed hands in 2007. (In 2007, GM counted half a million sales by a Chinese company in which it had only a minor stake.)
