Q. I recently heard some calcium supplements contain lead. I've been taking supplements to ensure I get enough calcium. What should I do now?
A. There's no need to panic. And there's certainly no reason to stop taking calcium supplements.
What you may have heard was a report that several brands of calcium and antacids (often used as calcium supplements) contain unacceptable levels of lead. Previous investigations have found high levels of lead in some calcium supplements from environmental contamination of mined calcium and tablet processing (though most often in those made from oyster shells, bone meal or dolomite).
