"History always repeats itself " goes the old saying, but nowhere is it truer than at the foundering Niagara Gazette, a place where newspaper careers go to die. Last week, Publisher Carl Helbig was canned just two months shy of his one-year anniversary with the paper.

Also getting the axe was Managing Editor Dick Lucinski, who once memorably described the Niagara Falls Reporter as "a weekly journal of opinion and commentary that tries to disguise itself as a newspaper" in a slavish column otherwise devoted to the fact he happened to have lunch with state Rep. Francine Del Monte.
