CAR dealers are warning that the Government faces a further e1billion hole in the State coffers unless it launches a rescue package for the motor industry.
The registration of new cars last month was down by more than 66 per cent compared to the same period last year.
Alan Nolan, directoS r general of the Society of Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), said there were very serious implications for the public purse.
In 2007 the tax take on VRT and VAT generated by new vehicles reached E2billion.
