The Army wants to test several unguided rockets to determine if they can be modified to work as radar-guided, short-ranged air defense (SHORAD) missiles, Army Space and Strategic Defense Command (SSDC) officials said yesterday.
The service wants to evaluate this concept, called SWORD (SHORAD with Optimized Radar Distribution), under a year-long advanced technology demonstration, the officials said.
"Our goal is to prove SWORD is feasible and inexpensive," one SSDC official said. If that demonstration is successful, the Army could chose to follow it up a four-year advanced concept technology demonstration, he added.
