Boston Fire Commissioner Roderick Fraser fended off criticism yesterday that the city left one of its largest neighborhoods, Grove Hall, guarded against fire by a lowly Ford pickup and a ladder truck that cannot carry water.
"I don't believe people were in any additional danger," Fraser said.
Grove Hall was left without Engine 24 while it was being serviced after firefighters complained about the brakes. Although the city has been actively acquiring new equipment, Fraser acknowledged the department's resources are stretched by inspections to 33 engines and 22 ladder trucks and about two dozen pieces of reserve apparatus, ...
