West Side Story is often described as 'groundbreaking' the 'mother of the modern musical' what do you feel are the main reasons for this? What in your opinion is the essence of the show?
It really is the seamlessness of the four elements of the show - book, lyrics, music, and choreography. It showed a musical could be dramatic and deeply emotional. Plus, it was the first ensemble piece where the dancers were actually principals in the story-telling.
