In 1995--when the department first began to carefully track such incidents--there were more than 1,000 "stabbings and slashings" in the city's jails. In calendar year 2006, there were just 19, and for the 12 months of fiscal year 2008 that ended July 1, there were once again only 19 incidents in which an inmate slashed or stabbed another.
