Byline: Erin Zureick

Feb. 5--SANFORD -- Fewer students at Lee County Schools dropped out last year, mirroring a statewide trend, the Department of Public Instruction announced today.

Lee County's drop-out rate fell to 4.97 percent for the 2007-08 school year, down from 5.83 percent the previous year.

Those results put the school district exactly in line with the state average and represent a marked improvement for Lee County Schools, which in past years had been in the lower tier in the state for the drop-out rate.

The district's rate was as high as 7.8 percent for the 2005-06 school year, when 230 students dropped out.
