Five international consortia have been prequalified by the Department of Transport to upgrade a 327 kilometre roadway between Abu Dhabi and the Saudi border, in a project worth Dh10 billion (US$2.5bn).
The Mafraq-Ghweifat motorway is the country s longest road and is the only road link between the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Its improvement is considered key to the development of Al Gharbia, the UAE s underpopulated and westernmost region.
