Interpersonal violence and suicide are significant public health problems among adolescents. Based on data from the 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), an estimated 9.2% of US high school students have ever been hit, slapped, or physically hurt on purpose by a boyfriend or girlfriend. (1) Further, an estimated 35.9% of high school students had been in a physical fight in the year preceding the survey, and 3.6% of students had been in a physical fight in which they were injured and had to be treated by a doctor or nurse during that same time period.
