BIRDLIFE SA has dismissed controversial statements by a Kimberley residents' group that impoverished locals will resort to eating the town's |famous lesser flamingos if |a contentious multibillion-rand housing development does not go ahead soon.
"I personally don't think they meant this, and they may regret the comment," says Mark Anderson, the executive director of BirdLife SA, about threats this week by the Concerned People of Roodepan to make "flamingo spit braais and fillets" from South Africa's only breeding population of lesser flamingos at Kamfers Dam.
