* Builders of inland barges and boats will receive 25,000 tons a month of steel plate and shapes for the next six months, up from 20,000 tons during the fourth quarter and January. After six months, it will be up to Congress to authorize the Commerce Department to extend steel quotas. The fourth quarter of 1948 was the first in which inland water transport was granted a steel allocation. While the plan was generally supported by industry, some boatyards reported shortages and spotty deliveries.
