Uwe Johnson's novels remain - as Fickert puts it - the object of literary controversy. Some still regard him as a 'difficult' author, he argues; others, by contrast, place him amongst the greatest twentieth-century writers. This study's stated purpose is to elucidate the narrative structure of Johnson's complex novels, in order to attempt a balanced evaluation of their nature and significance.
