It wasn't so long ago that Americans enjoyed--and expected--full-service gasoline stations, personal service at banks and retail establishments, and a friendly voice answering corporate telephones. Today, many of us prefer self-serve gas stations, online banking and bill-paying, and e-mail-based customer service. Not only do we not miss a real person answering the phone, we like the immediate gratification of being able to shoot an e-mail or leave a voicemail, and pushing a few buttons to make it happen is really no big deal.
