Introduction
Comprehension of the complexity of regulations and the definition of dietary supplements is essential in educating clients regarding appropriate use of supplements. In the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994, Congress defined the term "dietary supplement" as a product taken orally that contains a dietary ingredient intended to supplement the diet. Dietary ingredients in these products include vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, and substances such as enzymes, organ tissues, glandular substances and metabolites.
