With its owner and editor now in prison, the venerable St. Louis Argus, the oldest African-American owned business in Missouri, is facing hard times.
Argus owner Eddie Hasan did not return phone calls recently about his plans for the paper, in his absence. He was ordered to report to the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan., on Jan. 5 to begin serving a year and a day for tax evasion.
In the Dec, 11-17 issue of the Argus, an editorial announced that the paper would reduce its publication schedule in 2009, publishing two issues in January and one or two-issues a month from then on.
