It's safe to say that when editors/publishers/entrepreneurs launched their newsletters, the thought of "succession"--"What comes after me?"--wasn't usually at the forefront of their thinking.

But time passes, and newsletter operations have dealt with succession in differing ways. The Kiplinger Washington Letter, founded in 1923, is now in its third generation of family ownership. While the original Mr. Platt sold his oil industry publications to McGraw-Hill 50 years ago, the Platt's division of McG-H continues to be an industry leader.
