Unions demand mini-Budget to raise tax rate for wealthy
TALKS to secure '2bn in public spending cutbacks were facing a major stumbling block last night as unions demanded a mini-Budget to bring immediate income tax hikes for the wealthy into force.
But Taoiseach Brian Cowen reiterated his stance that tax changes would have to wait until the next Budget at the end of the year.
Senior union sources said it would be impossible to reach a deal on pay cuts unless the wealthy icontributed through higher income tax.
