Air Force acquisition officials in the next few days are expected to approve the initial low rate production of the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), according to Pentagon sources.
The initial buy is expected to be for 937 JDAMS, the sources said. Altogether, the Air Force and the Navy plan to buy 87,500 of the weapons at a cost of about $18,000 per unit. The JDAMS are built by McDonnell Douglas.
The JDAM is a guidance kit that converts free-fall bombs into precision-guided weapons. The Air Force B-2 is the first platform scheduled to receive the weapons.
