Kyowa Hakko (www.kyowa.co.jp/) is reporting increased sales of citrulline - a type of amino acid proven to accelerate blood flow within the body. The substance only recently received official approval in August 2008 by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for inclusion in beverages and food items such as chewing gum and health supplements.
According to Kyowa Hakko, Citrulline is naturally present in relatively large quantities in watermelons and other members of the gourd family and in addition to accelerating the blood flow acts as a powerful antioxidant and ammonia neutralising agent.
