Although advanced maternal age is the foremost indication for genetic amniocentesis, a significant percentage of women 35 years of age and older decline the procedure. For many women, ultrasonographic evaluation represents an acceptable compromise. Bahado-Singh and associates performed a study to determine the usefulness of ultrasonographic biometry for the detection of Down syndrome and other clinically significant chromosome defects.
