There are easier things to do in life than run a chain of hypermarkets. Space is at a premium, and planning permission is increasingly difficult to secure. On top of that, many shoppers look on loyalty cards as a way of reducing their shopping bills. With more and more people shopping around, the one stop shop is a tricky concept to master.
Savacentre food and marketing director Allan Webb thinks the Sainsbury subsidiary has the answer -- given enough space.
"Savacentre is a genuine one stop shop, but you need at least 80,000 sq ft for a proper hypermarket," he says. "There are too many compromises otherwise.
