Relationships between family environments and the aspirations of adolescents with varying ability levels and from different social status backgrounds were investigated in a previous study (Marjoribanks, 1995). The findings revealed that perceptions of parents' getting-ahead - getting-by orientations had differential associations with the educational and occupational aspirations of adolescents from differing ability/social status contexts. That is, the investigation provided support for Kahl's (1953) seminal analysis of relationships between parental support for learning and adolescents' ambitions.
