While oxidation catalysts are now being used widely to reduce particulate and other emissions from many existing diesel engines, they are not an all-encompassing solution. For example, many in-service Detroit Diesel Corp. two-stroke engines equipped with the DDEC electronic control system operate at significantly lower temperatures and VOF (volatile organic fraction) levels than older mechanical versions of the engines, making the challenge of reducing emissions appreciably more difficult.
