RANDI WEINGARTEN, HEAD OF the New York City teachers union United Federation of Teachers, took on the additional role of president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the second-largest teachers union in the country, this past July. An endorser of Barack Obama, she traveled through 18 states to campaign on his behalf and was rumored to have been under consideration for education secretary.
