The Maine media gang of "news reporters," apparently with little else to write during the recent holidays, rushed to judgment on an old story (1993) that Maine saltwater anglers will need a license to fish starting in 2010.
Not so fast.
This is a federal lobbying effort to tax anglers for a hodgepodge of redundant bureaucratic schemes, especially to establish an invasive national saltwater angler registry. The authorization for such a license/tax is included in the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, which has been around since 1976.
