WITHOUT Cardiff Docks, the city we know today might never have evolved.
At the time of the 1801 census, Cardiff was little more than a village with just 1,870 inhabitants. By 1901, the population was more than 80 times larger with 165,000 residents.
Had the city continued to expand at a similar rate, experts in 1901 believed its population could by now have swelled to 20 million, which is nearly three times the size of London.
