Award-winning actor Sidney Poitier formally became the Bahamas' new ambassador to Japan during a recent ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo where he presented his credentials to Emperor Akihito.
The 70-year-old film pioneer was appointed as the Caribbean Islands' Japanese ambassador in November of 1995, but the lengthy delay between his appointment and the ceremony was caused because the Bahamas does not have an embassy in Tokyo, according to a Japanese official.
