DURHAM, N.C., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- E. Rhone Sasser of Whiteville, North Carolina, has been elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Sasser succeeds Howard A. Penton, Jr. of Wilmington, North Carolina, who served as Chairman from 1995-1997 and who continues as a trustee.

Sasser, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of United Carolina Bancshares Corporation, has been a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina trustee since 1985. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Sasser has been with UCB since 1967.
