MEMPHIS--May 7--The football player and the cheerleader announced their business marriage Tuesday when Riddell Sports Inc. agreed to buy Varsity Spirit Corp. in a $91 million deal.
Riddell, based in New York, sells professional and school football equipment. Memphis-based Varsity sells cheer and dance team uniforms to schools and conducts cheerleading camps.
Riddell is offering shareholders $18.90 a share in cash. Varsity shares shot up $4 on Tuesday, closing at $18.50 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Riddell shares closed at $4.37 1/2, up 75 cents, also on Nasdaq.
When the deal is completed, Varsity will become a subsidiary of Riddell ...
