HANOI _ Former prisoner of war Pete Peterson arrived in Hanoi Friday to become the first U.S. ambassador to Vietnam since the end of the war 22 years ago.
``This is a very special day for America and for Vietnam,'' Peterson told a crowd of about 70 well-wishers who gathered at the Hanoi airport to greet his Thai Airways jet from Bangkok. ``It is a historical event and the beginning of a new era of constructive relations between Vietnam and the United States.''
