The Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Ohio that has emerged from the failed effort to join Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. vows it will not seek to merge or to sell its business to another company in the foreseeable future.
"To remain independent is our objective," said Kent W. Clapp, president, chief operating officer and acting chairman of Blue Cross, during an interview last Thursday.
Mr. Clapp's vision is a reversal from the message delivered by Mr. Clapp and his former boss, retiring chairman John "Jack" Burry, a year ago when they touted the Columbia/HCA deal as the best way to deliver quality, low-cost health care to Blue Cross policyholders.
