Carl Niehaus has quit the ANC as an employee, just ahead of it throwing him out.
Yesterday he tendered his resignation, hours after the ANC's national working committee placed its former spokesman on special leave and was deciding whether or not to charge him in terms of its own disciplinary code.
If it had convicted him, he would have lost his salary. However, he resigned, and this time the party accepted it.
On Friday, ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe refused to accept his resignation, saying the party would stand by the former activist and "help him rebuild his life".
