VAUXHALL workers were awaiting news on their jobs last night after the car maker announced plans to axe 47,000 workers worldwide.

The company, which is owned by U.S. giant General Motors, employs around 5,000 workers in Britain, including 2,000 at its manufacturing plant in Ellesmere Port, and 1,400 at a factory in Luton.

Both sites have already been forced to cut production and reduce working hours from 37 to 30 a week because of falling sales.

Last night, a spokesman for GM said it was not known how many British workers would be affected by the cuts.
