Three Republican senators told Air Force Secretary Sheila Widnall yesterday that they will not support another round of base closures unless the service changes its plans for implementing the 1995 base closure commission's recommendations to close depot maintenance facilities at two bases in California and Texas.
The meeting was the latest development in an escalating battle between members of Congress who are concerned that the Air Force's plans for competing depot maintenance workload performed at the two bases will hurt the prospects for work at the three remaining Air Force depots in Georgia, Oklahoma and Utah, each of which has significant excess capacity.
