May 14--3M MEETING NOTES. Shareholders at 3M's annual meeting were treated to a relaxed, upbeat, even affable chairman and chief executive officer.
The demeanor was a study in contrast to last year, when an uptight and perspiring L.D. DeSimone tried to placate stockholder and employee concerns about the spin-off of Imation and the elimination of 5,000 positions associated with its restructuring.
Tuesday's meeting at the St. Paul Civic Center was called to order in the usual manner, with DeSimone banging the gavel -- but this year he smiled, remarking wistfully, "I only get to do this once a year."
