Article: Nibble your way to a cure for deadly peanut allergy.(Features)

Byline: Andrew Levy

BRITISH scientists have made a dramatic breakthrough in the treatment of nut allergies which could bring relief for tens of thousands.

A group of children with severe peanut allergy built up a tolerance by being given tiny daily doses in powder form.

By the end of the six-month trial they could eat up to 12 peanuts a day without going into anaphylactic shock, a severe reaction which can cause death. On average, seven children die from peanut allergy each year.

Trials at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge will be extended to see if the technique can be used to tackle the huge increase in food allergies.
