Houston Police Officer James D. Harris was shot to death during a routine traffic stop on the night of July 13, 1982. The gun that killed him was found on the body of Roberto Carrasco some hours later, after Carrasco died in a shootout with police.
Following the shootout, Houston police and prosecutors focused their attention on Ricardo Aldape Guerra, a 20-year-old undocumented alien and acquaintance of Carrasco who was riding in Carrasco's car when Harris was murdered. Police advanced a scenario in which young Aldape Guerra shot the policeman and then traded guns with Carrasco as the two fled the scene of the killing. Although his fingerprints were not found ...
