Business at U.S. music stores continued to grow at a slower pace for the third quarter of 1996, ended September 30. During the period the music industry staged a modest comeback from a disappointing second quarter posting an overall sales gain of 3.2%. Industry sales for the period advanced to $1,274,970,000 compared to $1,234,551,000 for the same period last year. Results closely follow the overall U.S. economy where the widely watched U.S. index of leading economic indicators, an index designed to predict U.S. economic activity over the next six months - inched up only .2%.

Strongest results came from dealers in the western states where sales increased 4.2% for the period. ...
