A fired San Diego Housing Commission employee who claimed the action was motivated by racial discrimination won a $112,000 judgment against the agency last month.
Jesse Helton, a 53-year old white male, was laid off from his job as construction specialist in June 1995 after the agency changed the way it decided how to conduct layoffs.
Dale Larabee, Helton's attorney, successfully argued that instead of conforming to a previously agreed to formula basing layoffs on merit, the union and the Housing Commission agreed to use seniority as the basis for the firing.
