50 Hz versus 60 Hz. (use of 50-hertz electric line frequency vs. use of 60-hertz electric line frequency for heating and refrigeration equipment motors)(The Motor Doctor)

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (hvac) equipment field workers need to be familiar with the functional and economic aspects of hertz (Hz) electric line frequency units and how this applies to 60 Hz or 50 Hz electric motors that are used in their work. Although most European country power lines operate with 50 Hz, North and South America power lines use 60 Hz for a better balance of high efficiency and low power loss. Since hvac professions will encounter numerous Hz motor variants, knowledge of frequency becomes important.

Electric motor manufacturers face two major compatibility issues as their industry becomes more global: voltage and frequency
