NEW YORK -- The textile industry is remaking itself with new technologies and systems that executives said will make their companies and products more competitive in the global market.
A key example is what's happening in the domestic cotton industry, which is looking at ways to streamline the process of getting fiber from farm to fabric maker. The cost of cotton fiber, at 74 percent of the total, is the single most expensive element in the production of one pound of yarn, according to Cotton Incorporated, the marketing arm of U.S. cotton growers.
